ABC Works

ABC Works is a Day Training and Habilitation (DT&H) Program which operates in Houston County, Minnesota. The program serves people ages 18 and older with mental retardation and related conditions as well as people with other disabilities. ABC Works is licensed by the Region X Quality Assurance project. ABC Works provides individualized services to meet the needs and interests of their participants.

ABC Works provides community based employment opportunities for those interested in working at a job site in their community. Job Coaches provide supervision and training at each work site to ensure participant safety and success. Some work sites are individual placements (1 participant with 1 job coach) and some are crew jobs (1-3 participants with 1 Job Coach). A full time Employment Coordinator carefully matches each participant to potential employment opportunities in the community. Assistance is provided to facilitate the application and interview process. Support at job sites may be faded as participants become independent at the work site and/or natural supports are developed.

ABC Works also provides work opportunities in-center for those participants that are in-between jobs or who prefer in-center work. ABC Works has locations in Caledonia and LaCrescent. Many participants choose to work part-time in the community and part-time in center.

There are many opportunities for services other than work. These areas include: social activities, recreation, communication and therapy. ABC Works also provides or arranges transportation for their program participants.

Participants are referred to ABC Works by Houston County Human Services, the Department of Rehabilitation Services or the local school districts. Upon admission, a Program Coordinator is assigned to each participant. The Coordinator works closely with each participant and their support staff to design an individualized program which emphasizes the person-centered planning approach. Personal goals and outcomes are developed together to streamline services needed. Goals are reviewed and evaluated at least semi-annually.
