Supported Employment –
also called SE – is a CARF-accredited program designed to assist people in finding and successfully maintaining work outside of Ability Building Center. Since the goal of clients in Supported Employment is to work in the community, they are independent and capable. Many are on the path to independent placement – either ABC-paid or employer-paid work – but are working in groups or on crews while still developing essential skills.
In the Supported Employment program, a client’s job might look like one of these:
The support a client gets from his or her ABC Job Coach and fellow crew members can be the key to achieving the highest level of independence and success. Other clients already have the necessary work and social skills, but still benefit from monthly “check-ins” and semi-annual team-meetings. Whether it’s working on an ABC-paid mobile custodial crew or supporting a small business by providing document prep, scanning, and data entry, ABC wants for its clients what they want for themselves: to work and get paid for it.
As with all of ABC’s programs, Supported Employment is staffed by professionals dedicated to a Person-Centered, team-based approach to ensure continued success. Each client’s team may include family, guardians, a social worker, medical or mental health providers, residential staff, the client him- or herself, and of course, an ABC Program Coordinator.

Many are on the path to independent placement – either ABC-paid or employer-paid work – but are working in groups or on crews while still developing essential skills. In the Supported Employment program, a client’s job might look like one of these:
- Male and female attendants work with minimal ABC staff supervision, maintaining the locker rooms throughout the day at Mayo Clinic’s Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center employee fitness complex. The staff at the fitness center provides most of the support necessary for these individuals to succeed.
- A Document Scanning Specialist who trained in ABC’s Paperless Office Solutions work area was hired directly by Cardinal of Minnesota. He preps, sorts, scans, does data entry, and provides other related services with support from Cardinal and follow-up services from ABC.
- ABC-supervised mobile custodial crews visit businesses like Warners’ Stellian Appliances, the Rochester Off Campus School, The Salvation Army, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and a number of other businesses. Crew members build skills as they get support and structure from their coaches, other members of the crew, and employees at the businesses they visit.
- A team provides electronics testing, packaging, and general assembly at Benchmark Electronics. Team members are paid by ABC, but supervised and naturally supported by Benchmark staff.
- Independent teams provide laundry room services at the Rochester Athletic Club and Michael’s Restaurant. ABC coaching and supervision is minimal, because the businesses provide natural supports.
- A team of Document Scanning Specialists work 5 days a week at a Mayo Clinic support center. With their ABC Job Coach to support them, they are completing a digital archive of Mayo Clinic historical photographs, books, and other materials. Members of this team are learning and refining technology-based skills, like working with Adobe Photoshop, adhering to International metadata standards, and using the internet to find answers and check facts.
