What Does an ABC Job Coach Do?

Hello, my name is Jennifer. I’m a job coach at Ability Building Center.

Do you know what a Job Coach is, and what I get to enjoy every day at work?

Maybe this will help make my job clearer:

What I Do:
  • I supervise anywhere from 5 to 30 people with disabilities within the community and also at ABC.
  • Throughout my day, I help with restroom needs, help build social skills, and train people for new jobs.
  • I help provide a safe and fun environment for people with disabilities, so they can learn and get to know one another.
  • I ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed.
  • I do daily case notes and chart progress.
  • I pick up 6 to 8 people at their homes and bring them to ABC.
What I REALLY Do:
  • I talk with everyone throughout the day, building relationships and basically “socializing”.
  • I give and get 20 or 30 high-fives as soon as I walk in the door to “work”.
  • I go home with a smile every day, knowing that I have made someone smile and made someone’s today better than her yesterday.
  • I help people in every aspect of their lives.
  • I get to encourage people all day long that they can do a great job and enjoy doing it.
  • I make sure that people arrive safely at ABC.
  • I get to laugh and chat with each person on my crew or in my area, and I really get to know them.
What I Get:
  • I get a paycheck.
  • I get a place to go to work every day.
  • I get to know coworkers, and build real relationships with them.
  • I get support from my managers, with ongoing trainings and frequent, open discussions about the job and the people I coach.
  • I get lots of smiles and high-fives.
  • What I REALLY Get:
  • I get to see smiling, happy people every day, all day long.
  • I get to go home knowing that I’ve made a positive impact in the lives of all the people I’m lucky enough to work with and coach.
  • I get to build great relationships with some amazing people.
  • I get to go home and look forward to coming back to ABC the next day just to see the smiles.
  • I get to be greeted warmly every day by each person I coach and all my coworkers.
  • I get to know that all the people I coach look forward to coming back to ABC the next day.
  • I get to learn about each unique person I coach, and know them for who they really are.
  • I get rewarded each day just by seeing happy, smiling faces.
  • I get to take the people I coach out into the community for work and for fun.
  • I get to LOVE my job every day.
